Registration Open for Spring Workshops

TASB Spring Workshops are now underway, with sessions offered at 17 locations across the state. From McAllen to Canyon and Lubbock to Nacogdoches, the workshops make it easy for board members to access timely and relevant training close to home.

The workshops launched in late March and continue through May 21. Session programming offers board members the chance to earn continuing education credits on subjects that are relevant to them and their school communities, while also providing the latest legislative updates. They also offer an opportunity to network with other board members from neighboring communities.

Workshops may be structured with a home district or region in mind but board members and superintendents from any region in Texas may attend workshops they believe will be beneficial – no matter the location.

The Spring Workshops are typically held during the weeknights at partner locations, which include school districts, Education Service Centers, and universities. Participants are encouraged to register in advance by each session’s deadline.

Along with regional sessions of interest, additional in-demand offerings this year include

Legal Update: This presentation with a TASB attorney will update you on legal developments from the courts, commissioner, and attorney general, as well as regulatory agencies. You’ll hear the latest legal news affecting public school employees, students, parents, business operations, governance, and more.

Catching up with the Texas Legislature — The 89th Legislative Session is shaping up to be one of the most difficult for public schools as many believe this is the session vouchers will be passed and additional funding for schools is not assured. Learn about the bills working their way through the legislative process and how they may impact your students and schools. (General session credit only, Not Legislative Update credit due to session still ongoing.

Community Advocacy: Seven Steps to Amplify Public Education Support — Local and statewide advocacy is an important role for trustees. But how can you expand your influence and engage more community members in these efforts? This session explains seven steps your board can take to develop local community advocates into engaged champions of public education in your district and beyond.

Good Governance: Asking Meaningful Questions — School boards receive regular reports and tons of data from the administration. How do you process all that information in ways that lead to good decision-making by the board? How do you stay at the board-level and out of the weeds? This session introduces a framework for thinking about questions you might want to ask your superintendent or staff.

Special Education Staff: Why Do We Need So Many? Staffing to meet the needs of students in special education can consume a significant amount of your budget and appear a bit excessive. To help you understand these concerns, the presenters will briefly explain the decision-making requirements for serving students with disabilities, differentiate between caseload and workload approaches to staffing, and discuss the common roles and responsibilities of key special education service providers.

Workshop registration will continue on a rolling basis at locations across the state. Visit the TASB Spring Workshops page to find a location near you, check session dates, get more information, and to register.
