Governance

Amaya was elected to the Los Fresnos CISD Board in 2004. During his tenure on the board, he has served as president and assistant secretary. 

He is a native of Los Fresnos and a first generation American. Amaya has a master’s degree in education administration from The University of Texas Pan American. He has been an educator for more than 40 years, teaching and coaching. He is currently assistant principal at Raymondville Early College High School in Raymondville ISD. 

Sánchez Garza has served on the South Texas ISD Board since 2008. She is currently the board secretary.  

She has a doctorate in leadership studies from Our Lady of the Lake University’s School of Business and Leadership, a master’s degree in educational administration from Lamar University, a master of fine arts in creative writing, and a bachelor’s degree in English from The University of Texas Pan American. Sánchez Garza and her husband own B.I.C. Development and Garco Ranch Communities. She is an author and her book Cascarones has won several literary awards. 

Sánchez Garza is a 2012 Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. 

Alfaro has been a board member for Mathis ISD since 2015. He is currently the board secretary. 

He is a former educator, having served as a teacher in Pasadena ISD and a teacher, assistant principal, associate principal, and principal in Mathis ISD. Currently, he works as a health, safety, and environmental manager for Brown & Root Industrial Services at the Celanese Chemical Plant in Bishop. Alfaro also works part time for the Region 2 ESC as a field supervisor for Crossroads, an adult education program. 

Alfaro earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from The University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in educational administration and a doctorate in educational leadership from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. 

Pruett was elected to the Victoria ISD School Board in 2016 and currently serves as the board secretary. She has worked in Victoria ISD, first as a permanent substitute teacher and later as a bilingual kindergarten/first-grade teacher’s assistant. Currently, Pruett is a legal assistant at Anderson, Smith, Null & Stofer, LLP. 

In 2013, she graduated with honors from the Commonwealth Funeral Institute in Houston. 

Avalos has served on the Aldine ISD board since 2006 and is currently the assistant secretary.   

Avalos served as an educator in Aldine ISD for 33 years. During her tenure, she was a teacher, counselor, program director, assistant principal, and middle and high school principal. She was named the district’s Principal of the Year in 2002 and 2003. Avalos currently serves as an educational consultant for the Region 4 ESC.  

She holds a bachelor’s and a master’s in education from Sam Houston State University. 

Breaux was elected to the Alief ISD Board in 2017. Currently, she serves as board vice president and chair of the policy committee. 

She has held a variety of roles in education: teacher, reading specialist, dyslexia and intervention coordinator, campus principal, and director of special populations. Since 2016, she has served as director of the Research and Evaluation Institute at the Harris County Department of Education.  

Breaux holds a bachelor’s from Texas Southern University, a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, and a doctorate in organizational leadership from Abilene Christian University.  

Hopkins has served on the Friendswood ISD Board since 2008 and is currently the board president.   

He is president of Four Creeks Investments LLC, an independent energy consulting and investment firm, and also vice president of Modular Plant Solutions LLC. Hopkins earned a bachelor’s degree at Lamar University and a master’s degree at Rice University. 

He is a Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. 

Lemond Flowers was appointed to the Houston ISD board in 2023 and serves as secretary, 

She has worked in education for 25 years, including as a teacher and administrator. She currently teaches high school English. During her professional career, Lemond Flowers has served as director of alumni leadership development for Teach For America and as executive director of Writers in Schools. 

Lemond Flowers earned a bachelor’s in English literature from Mount Holyoke College and a master’s in educational leadership from Columbia University. 

Fox served on the Katy ISD Board 2004-19 and was reelected to the board in 2021. 

She works part-time as a motivational speaker and parent educator. She volunteers in schools across the district through KEYS mentoring, Junior Achievement, Promise-to-Read, and a variety of other programs. Fox attended Southeastern Louisiana University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in consumer and family science.  

Fox is a 2007 Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. She also is a member of the School Board Advocacy Network.

Malone joined the Fort Bend ISD Board in 2021 and currently serves as president. 

She is the vice president of finance at CME Printing Inc. Malone holds a bachelor of business administration in finance from Texas A&M University, is a graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, and is a strong supporter of several industry organizations. 

Phillips is the president of the Nederland ISD Board and has served on the board for more than 11 years.   

He is the principal at West Brook High School in Beaumont ISD and previously served the district as principal and associate principal at Marshall Middle School. Before moving into administrative roles, he spent seven years teaching world geography and U.S. history in Beaumont and Port Arthur ISDs. Phillips earned bachelor’s and master's degrees from Lamar University. 

He is a Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. 

Prykryl was elected to the New Caney ISD Board in 2016 and currently serves as assistant secretary for the board. 

Since 2012, she has served as a lawyer for Valence Operating Company. Prykryl has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Oklahoma and her Juris Doctor from the University of Oklahoma. 

Wagaman serves on the Conroe ISD Board and is currently second vice president. 

She is a licensed residential realtor with Compass Real Estate, serving The Woodlands, Spring, and surrounding areas for more than 14 years. Wagaman attended Texas Tech University where she earned a bachelor's degree in communications and English.  

Raymond is president of the Sabine ISD Board of Trustees, a position he has held since 2016. He was elected to his local board in 2004.  

He is employed with Ubeo Business Services. 

Darden has served on the Cooper ISD Board since 2002 and currently serves as the board president. 

Darden is a systems engineering manager for L3Harris, a defense contractor in Greenville, where he has worked for more than 35 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University and a master's degree in electrical engineering from The University of Texas at Arlington.   

Darden is a 2007 Leadership TASB graduate. 

Lukert joined the Wichita Falls ISD Board in 2018. 

He has been an educator for more than 40 years and spent 21 years as an elementary school principal. Currently, he is a national trainer, speaker, and leadership coach for the John Maxwell Team. He also presents keynote addresses for various organizations and conducts teambuilding workshops across the nation. 

Ikard is secretary of the Maypearl ISD Board and has been a trustee for 15 years.  

She earned an associate degree in business administration from Southwestern Assemblies of God University. After graduating, she began her business career at a family-owned oil and gas corporation in Dallas. Ikard retired in December 2017 after 33 years in corporate financial management. She and her husband own a business, where she handles the day-to-day operations. 

She has served on the TASB Legislative Advisory Council for Region 10 and as her board’s delegate at the TASB Delegate Assembly. 

Gooch has served on the Sunnyvale ISD board for more than 25 years and currently serves as vice president.  

She is vice president for Morgan Stanley. Gooch has been active in many district and civic organizations, including the Alumni Association, Sunnyvale Education Foundation, and the Raider Pride Booster Club.  

She is a member of TASB’s School Board Advocacy Network. 

Micciche was elected to the Dallas ISD Board in 2012. He served as board president from 2016 to 2018 and is currently first vice president.

He recently retired from the law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld. Micciche received his undergraduate degree from Stony Brook University in New York and his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School. He has been recognized by D Magazine as one of the Best Lawyers in Dallas and by Texas Monthly as a Super Lawyer.

Carbó was elected to the Mesquite ISD Board in 1996. 

He recently retired from the City of Dallas, where he was a manager in the Aviation Department. Carbó graduated from Colegio San Antonio in Puerto Rico. He earned his bachelor of business administration in finance from Dallas Baptist University in 1995 and received his  master of business administration from the University of Dallas in 1999.  

Classe has served on the Frisco ISD Board since 2014.  

He is a Certified Financial Planner™ professional and has been serving clients with Bell Financial Group in Frisco since 2002. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a minor in computer science from Vanderbilt University. 

Classe is a 2019 Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. 

Cole has been a trustee on the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD Board since 2013 and is currently serving as secretary.  

She has been employed at Fidelity Investments since 2016 as part of the customer knowledge and strategic insights group, leading the interaction analytics team for personal investing. 

Cole is a 2018 Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. 

Phillips has served on Fort Worth ISD Board since 2019 and is first vice president. 

He is a professor in the Criminal Justice Department of Texas Christian University. Phillips earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Prairie View A&M University. He is also a graduate of Palmer Theological Seminary at Eastern University where he received a master’s degree in theological studies.  

Chapa has served on the Arlington ISD Board since 2017 and currently serves as the board’s vice president. 

He is counsel in the Dallas office of O’Melveny & Myers LLP. Chapa spent his undergraduate years at Harvard University, earning a bachelor’s degree in government. Upon graduating, he joined Teach for America and taught 12th grade government and economics classes at Rivera High School in Brownsville. He then pursued his Juris Doctorate at Stanford Law School, where he concurrently earned a master’s degree in education.   

Newcom has served on the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD Board for 28 years and is currently the board secretary.  

Now retired, he owned and operated his own accounting firm in the community for 37 years. Newcom is a Baylor University graduate and a certified public accountant. 

He is a Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. 

Watkins has served on the La Vega ISD Board for 27 years. She recently completed a term as board president and has previously served as secretary, assistant secretary, and vice-president. 

In May 2020, Watkins retired from her career as an educator. Her last post was as principal of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department, where she worked from 2006 to 2020. Watkins has a bachelor’s degree from Paul Quinn College, a master’s degree in education from Prairie View A&M University, and a special education certification from Baylor University. 

Boswell began her service on the Austin ISD Board in 2020.  

She is an award-winning broadcast journalist, with experience as a New York-based producer for NBC News and a series producer for KLRU-TV, Austin’s PBS station. Boswell earned degrees in journalism and Latin American studies from Southern Methodist University and her Juris Doctor from The University of Texas School of Law. 

Hetrick is in her third term on the Dripping Springs ISD Board of Trustees, currently serving as president.  

Her professional experience includes working as an adjunct professor for Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM), Troy University, and Austin Community College. In 2014, she founded a nonprofit consulting business. Hetrick received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The University of Texas Pan American (now UT Rio Grande Valley), a master’s degree in public administration, a certificate in nonprofit management from AUM, and a doctorate in public administration and public policy from Auburn University. 

She is a 2017 Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. 

Major was elected to the Liberty Hill ISD Board in 2018. She is vice president of the board. 

Her education career spanned 37 years, with 34 years spent in Region 13. She retired in 2017, after serving 17 years as principal at Liberty Hill Intermediate School. Major earned a bachelor’s degree in child development and teaching from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from The University of Texas at Austin. 

Welch has served on Clyde CISD Board since 1998. 

He works as a manufacturing plant manager for Ludlum Measurements Inc., where he has been employed since 2002. Welch attended Angelo State University and went on to work as a machinist and production manager at Froman Manufacturing Inc.  

Meza is serving his third term on the San Felipe Del Rio CISD Board and currently serves as board president.  

His experience in education includes serving as a kindergarten and sixth grade teacher, a middle school principal, and school board trustee.  

 Spanel has been on the Highland Park ISD-Potter County Board since 2004, serving as secretary for six years and vice president for four years.  

Currently semiretired, Spanel is a veteran of the U.S. Navy. She served from 1974 to 1977, with an honorable discharge, disabled veteran. She earned an associate of applied science degree from Amarillo College. 

She is a 2010 Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. 

Bentancourt has served on the Slaton ISD Board of Trustees for 27 years and is board president.  

He is currently employed at Associated Supply Company. Bentancourt attended South Plains College and has been involved in music ministry for 40 years. 

He is a Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. 

Brown began serving on the ECISD Board after he retired from the district in 2011. 

He dedicated 35 years to ECISD as a teacher and administrator. He received his doctorate in education administration, master’s degree in guidance and counseling, and bachelor’s degree in political science from Texas Tech University. He also earned a master’s degree in education administration from Sul Ross State University. 

He is a Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. Brown also is a trustee on the TASB Risk Management Fund Board. 

Najera was elected to the Socorro ISD Board of Trustees in 2010. 

She has worked in several positions with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Agricultural Extension Service.  

Najera is a 2015 Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee.  

Friesenhahn joined the East Central ISD Board in 2021. 

Professionally, Friesenhahn has focused on early child development. Her family owns and operates a childcare center, which was established in 1985. 

Harle was elected to the Northside ISD-Bexar County board in 2013.  

She was a teacher and administrator and currently serves as an educational consultant and school improvement coach for several school districts. She teaches in the College of Education for The University of Texas at San Antonio. Harle earned her master’s in education from Texas State University and her doctorate in curriculum studies from The University of Texas at Austin.  

Harle is a 2018 Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. 

Sena was elected to the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees in 2014.

He had a career in advertising sales and then opened his own insurance agency, specializing in health insurance for small businesses. Sena graduated from Colgate University with a degree in political science and international relations.

He is a Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee.

Sublasky is president of the Texas Association of Education Service Centers (TAESC) and has served for 23 years. His service to Texas public education began as a school board member for Fabens ISD. He served 22 years on the board, with 11 years as president. During his local tenure, he was elected to the TASB Board, serving from 1992 to 1998. He is a TASB past president.  

Sublasky is a Leadership TASB graduate and Master Trustee. He was part of the charter class in 1992.
