A recently released report of youth risk behavior from 2013 to 2023 reveals mostly unfavorable shifts in the percentages of students experiencing different forms of violence in schools.

The report, released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), shows nearly all surveyed experiences of violence increased during the 10-year period.

Areas of violence trending in the wrong direction include the number of students who:

  • Were threatened with a weapon at school
  • Did not go to school because of safety concerns
  • Experienced sexual violence by anyone

The number of students who were electronically bullied remained the same, while the number of students who were bullied at school is trending in a more positive direction.
