Three Takeaways from TASB’s Conference for Administrative Professionals

More than 140 people from Texas school districts, regional education service centers, and a community college gathered for the 2024-25 TASB Conference for Administrative Professionals at TASB Headquarters in October and February.

The conference, held Oct. 24-25 and Feb. 20-21, included sessions on legal issues, artificial intelligence, quiet leadership, and meeting minutes. The two-day event focused on the training and support needed for the challenging work of administrative professionals.

“The job of administrative professionals is incredibly valuable,” said TASB Executive Director Dan Troxell. “Because of the hard work they do, public schoolchildren can fulfill their greatest dreams. There is no greater work than that.”

Better Understanding of Artificial Intelligence

A session led by Amanda Bigbee, TASB Policy Service division director, focused on streamlining tasks and adding a touch of creativity in How to Make AI Your Friend, Really! Administrative professionals discovered practical tools and tips with a future-forward approach to productivity.

Quiet Leaders of the District

Pflugerville ISD Superintendent Quintin Shepherd discussed with the group how they are the gatekeepers and quiet leaders in their districts. The session explored how simple changes in language and mindset can lead to fostering a culture of compassion and empathy that impacts all stakeholders in the district.

 Benefits of a Strong Team

The final session, and a crowd favorite, gave attendees an opportunity to hear from superintendents and their administrative assistants. The panel, moderated by Troxell, featured Shepherd and his executive assistant, Maize Hamilton, along with Greg Bonewald, superintendent of Wimberley ISD, and his executive assistant, Ashley Buse. The group discussed best practices and strategies for promoting communication, building trust, and sharing an understanding of roles and responsibilities. The audience had an opportunity to ask questions and gather insights on strengthening their own working relationships with superintendents.

The next conference will be held Oct. 22-24. Look for more information on the 2025-26 conference in August.
