The National Educator Shortage

The American Association of School Personnel Administrators (AASPA) recently hosted the 2022 National Educator Shortage Summit with the goal of examining and addressing systemic issues contributing to the national shortage of educators.

AASPA recently released 5 Shifts to Address the National Educator Shortage, Findings from the National Educator Shortage Summit. This document is a compilation of the work of more than 200 PK-20 stakeholders who were committed to sharing their diverse perspectives and discovering opportunities to replicate promising practices.

After identifying key external factors impacting educator shortages, Summit participants noted five comprehensive shifts to implement:

  • Reduce barriers to careers in education while preserving standards of excellence.
  • Design comprehensive human capital management systems.
  • Establish transparent and equitable total rewards systems.
  • Strengthen educators’ sense of purpose, belonging, and connection.
  • Deliver exceptional employment experiences.

Each shift is contrasted to a traditional call to action and contains high-level recommendations and examples of actions different stakeholder groups can take to help make a difference. A summary of barriers to change and guidelines for collective action is also included.
