Time Off for Voting

As early voting begins on October 21, 2024, college and district employees need to be familiar with local procedures for requesting time off to vote.

During the early voting period, many counties provide extended hours before and after the workday and weekend hours to accommodate voters. However, some employees may still need to vote during the workday, either during the early voting period or on election day.

The procedure for requesting time off for voting should be included in your college or district employee handbook. If your organization requires proof of voting, this requirement should also be included. It’s good practice to remind employees of the steps they must take to be absent from work to vote.

For information regarding voter registration, polling places, ballots, and more, the Texas Secretary of State provides the VoteTexas website. Information regarding campaign speech rights can be found in the TASB School Law eSource paper Campaign Speech During Elections (member login required).
