Who Is Policy Service?
TASB Policy Service is made up of eight policy consultants, three editors, three production staff, two operations staff, three assistant directors (who also serve as policy consultants), and a division director. But who are we really?
As you can see, we have a wealth of experience in public education, legislative and governmental entities, nonprofits, and higher education. But here are some things you won’t see from these numbers.
Our Roots in Public Education Run Deep
Many of us come from long lines of educators. Our mothers were school counselors, reading specialists, math teachers, and assistant principals. Our fathers were teachers, coaches, assistant principals, principals, and a superintendent. Our siblings are teachers, coaches, counselors, and administrators. Even our grandparents and great-grandparents were in education: one of our great-grandmothers gave a failing grade to her own son in Latin at Amarillo High School in the 1920s!
We Do a Lot of Volunteer Work
In addition to our volunteer work supporting public education, we also volunteer with:
- Agencies that protect children and provide shelter for people in abusive situations
- Arts organizations
- Boy Scouts
- Congregations
- Food banks
- Fraternities and Sororities
- Grant-making organizations
- Habitat for Humanity
What Do We Like About Working at TASB?
When you ask us why we work at TASB, we’ve got a lot to say.
We’re Passionate About Public Education
We want to make an impact on public schools and support public school staff, parents, and teachers. A member of our team who returned to Policy Service after some time in a for-profit business says that they came back because “I found myself missing the sense of purpose TASB offered. TASB was not just a job but where my passion aligned with my work.”
We Like Each Other
We see each other as kind, caring, smart, dedicated, funny, compassionate people who bring their best to work. A member of our administrative team says, “I love our sense of community, the shared vision, and the work environment.”
We Like a Challenge
One of our production team says that their favorite thing about working for Policy Service is “seeing a complicated system or process — and it has to be complicated, because every school district is different — come to life and work in a way that serves everyone.” Another says that “we are always learning about new legal requirements and how to best serve members.”
We Like Our Members
One of our editors says that even though they don’t interact with districts directly, they’re happy to serve them through the publications we provide. We’re delighted when we can help an administrator or board member with a question, and we like visiting districts in person to work with administrators and board members. Some of us even like the road trips: as one consultant says, “What other job lets me visit Paris and Palestine in a single day?”
We’d Love to Hear from You
